It's even quicker when you have a Tulip Two-Minute Tie-Dye Kit ... you read that right ... you can take the tie-dye set process from 8 hours to 2 minutes so you can get your tassel project done in no time! Just grab a Two-Minute Tie-Dye Kit and check out this tutorial from Handmade Charlotte to see how easy it is to make your own colorful tie-dye tassels for baskets, bags and more.
- Tulip Two-Minute Tie-Dye Kit
- Cotton yarn
- Cardboard square
- Scissors
- Mesh laundry bag
- Woven baskets
- Hot glue gun or permanent fabric glue
You can start out with white cotton yarn, or feel free to mix in other lighter colors you can then add dye to after you make your tassels!
To make a tassel, tie a strand of yarn around your cardboard square. Then wrap the yarn around the square in the opposite direction about 45 times and cut.
Untie the first strand and tie it around the bulk of strands to secure.
Cut through the bulk of strands to remove from the cardboard square and straighten.
Divide the top half in half and pull the strands down next to the lower half of strands.
Wrap a strand around the upper folded over portion and secure to create your tassel. Trim the bottom to even out strands.
Repeat process to create as many tassels as desired.
Soak your tassels in a bowl of water to dampen, then wring out. Place your damp tassels on a covered work surface and prep your dye according to instructions.
Add desired dye colors along the bottom halves of tassels to create an ombre/dip-dye effect.
Place your dyed tassels into the special containers and microwave carefully according to instructions. Note: make sure your tassels are still damp before microwaving to avoid any potential scorching. Your yarn must be damp! If it dries out before you place in the container, simply dampen a bit under the faucet or by misting with water.
Once your tassels have processed in the microwave and set, place them in a mesh laundry bag and wash on gentle cycle, then air dry.
Glue around the rims of your baskets and let dry completely!
So many pretty colorful tassels! Use your baskets for storing your other crafty supplies and more. If you have extra tassels, try adding them to a tote bag for color everywhere you go!
