Prewash, fold and bind dress, then prepare dye solutions

Before you get started on this ombre tie-dye dress, prewash the dress that you’ll be tie dyeing and leave it damp. Lay your dress out flat on your covered work surface and accordion pleat and fold vertically and use rubber bands to secure, evenly spacing each rubber band to create 5 sections. Prepare your tie-dye solutions according to package instructions. For this project, we’re using all 5 colors in the Retro Brights Kit!

Apply dye to each section

To create ombre tie-dye effects, saturate each section of fabric with one color of dye and use a spray bottle filled with water to diffuse and blend the colors where they meet. Alternately, after applying dye to each section, you can cut the rubber bands with scissors, lay the dress flat, and use a paintbrush and water to blend the colors in each section.

Place your ombre tie-dye dress in a sealed bag or cover with plastic to keep damp while the dye sets, 6 to 8 hours or overnight for more intense colors. Once the dye has set, remove the rubber bands and launder according to package instructions. Your new summer fashion staple is now ready to wear!
