Are you looking for a simple yet stunning costume for your kids this Halloween? Look no further! Ghosts are a spooky staple for the season, of course, but surely the classic white bedsheet could use an upgrade. Oh Yay Studio will show us how to create a frightfully fun glowing ghost costume using the Tulip Glow in the Dark Tie-Dye Kit!
- Tulip One-Step Glow in the Dark Tie-Dye Kit
- 100% cotton flat kid’s bedsheet
- Scissors
Before you get started, prewash and dry your bedsheet. Then choose your technique for folding and binding your project. In this example, Oh Yay Studio uses the accordion tie-dye technique.
Prepare the tie-dye solutions according to the package instructions. Add water to each bottle at the indicated “Water Fill” line. Reattach the nozzle with cap on and shake vigorously for a minimum of 1 minute. Remove the nozzle again and add the Glow Mixer to the indicated “Mixer Fill” line. Reattach the nozzle and cap and shake the solution for a minimum of 1 minute.
Apply your desired color of Glow Tie-Dye solution to each section, getting into all of the folds and crevices. Be sure to wear gloves during this step! To help the fabric absorb the dyes, work the solution into the fabric using your hands as you apply it. While applying they dye solution, shake regularly to ensure an even distribution of glow pigment in the dye. For best results, dye should be applied to a dry project.
When you’re finished applying the dye, remove the rubber bands and unfold your sheet. Lay the garment horizontally on the lined workspace to air dry for at least 24 hours to allow the dye to set. Flip the garment over halfway through the drying process to ensure that all layers dry thoroughly. Once it has thoroughly dried, machine wash your garment with cold water and a mild detergent on the “delicate” setting and allow to air dry.
Have your child try on the sheet, and measure approximately where their eyes are lined up on the fabric. It helps to mark the fabric so that you know exactly where to cut. Finally, cut out the two eye holes and your ghoulishly glowing ghost costume is ready! To charge the glow pigments, place the garment outside in the sunlight for 30-60 seconds or use a flashlight to recharge at night as needed.
