Gather your supplies for your Yin Yang tie-dye project.

Step 2: Prepare your project

Before you get started on your yin yang tie-dye project, prewash the substrate that you’ll be dyeing and lay the damp fabric flat on a protected work surface. Prepare your tie-dye solutions by adding water to the dye bottles, filling to the neck. Replace the cap tightly and shake well until dye powder is fully dissolved.

Step 3: Trace circles

Use a plastic cup and washable marker to trace a pair of circles for your yin yang tie-dye tee. The circles within the yin yang symbol represent the presence of the opposite aspect within each of the primary forces.

Step 4: Draw division line

Use washable marker to draw the division line between the circles. The curved line that separates the dark and light halves of the yin yang symbol represents the dynamic interplay between yin and yang.

Step 5: Bind circles

Pinch the center of each circle and upwards to the edge of the marked area. Secure the circles with rubber bands.

Step 6: Pleat along line

Tightly pleat your shirt along the marker line so that the line appears as straight as possible when all the pleats are together. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the pleated fabric at this marker line.

Step 7: Apply dyes

It’s time to add color to your yin yang tie-dye tee! Apply a dark-colored dye to one half of the fabric and a light-colored dye to the other. Apply opposite dyes to the inner circles. The presence of the opposite color within each half of the yin yang symbol illustrates the idea that within darkness, there is always a spark of light, and within light, there is always a hint of darkness.

Step 8: Wrap & let set

Once you’ve finished applying dyes to your yin yang tie-dye tee, cover with plastic wrap or place your project into a sealable plastic bag. Allow the dyes to set for 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant results.
